Every Primal Play garment is cut from modal, a cellulose fiber spun from beech pulp. We tested a lot of alternatives before settling on it, and the decision came down to three things.
It holds its hand through the wash
Cotton knits tend to firm up over repeated laundering as the fibers shorten and stiffen. Modal has a longer staple and a smoother surface, so the fabric feels the same on the hundredth wear as it did on the first. For a child who notices texture, that consistency matters more than how soft something feels on day one.
It moves moisture
Modal takes up more moisture than cotton of the same weight and releases it faster. Underwear that stays damp starts to cling, and clinging is its own kind of distraction.
It has no surface for a fingertip to find
The knit face is smooth and even. No slub, no nap, nothing raised.
What we do with it
The fabric is only half of it. Seams are flat-locked rather than overlocked, so no ridge sits against the skin. The waistband is fully encased, meaning the elastic is wrapped in fabric on every surface and never touches the body. There is no woven tag anywhere on the garment; size and care are printed directly on the inside back panel in a soft ink that will not crack.
The waistband construction is patent-pending.
Care
Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Skip the fabric softener, which coats the fiber and dulls the surface over time. No bleach.
